…there’s a cat in Lynne’s next book, MOTHERS OF FATE! She wants you to know, she did her level best to get rid of it, but she’s failed. It’s dead in her house (see photo proof) but alive and well in the novel. She assures you, though, the (dull) gray cat has only a bit part–no intelligent thought and certainly no wise dialog such as you’d expect from, say, a brilliant and beautiful beagador. Cassie apologizes and is lobbying for a fine dog in the book after this new one.
Cassie insisted on talking first and now that’s out of the way so I can show you this! Also, I’m sharing the cover for the first time (known in the trade as a cover reveal, meaning I’ve not put this on social media or anywhere else yet.) This will publish on April 22, 2025, and it’s now gone up on Amazon and every other online retail site–Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes and Noble, Books A Million, Apple, Google Play, Kobo.
Here’s the Publishers Marketplace announcement and the cover:
And a better preview of what the story’s about, from the back cover:
After a disabling accident leaves Deana Wilkes pregnant, jobless, and isolated, she is pressured to give up Daniel, her newborn son, for adoption. The boy grows up angry and resentful, lashing out. His adoptive parents struggle to help him and to manage their family life. Now, thirty years later, Deana hires attorney Monica Connell to find her adult son and extend an offer to meet. Unwittingly, she detonates a timebomb in Monica’s life with her wife, as their own family is also shaped by adoption.
Lynne Hugo’s thirteenth novel takes on the reverberating effects of sexual power dynamics in the workplace and vividly portrays lingering psychological wounds. Characters struggle to reconcile control of their own lives with the sacrifices love demands and their longing for a second chance.

I know I’ve told you before about how important pre-orders are to a novel’s success. They gauge early interest and help the publisher know how many print copies to order for the initial run, even if the orders are for ebooks, because because interest and enthusiasm are crucial. Also, though, I know there are a lot of ebook listeners, and I’m also thrilled to be able to tell you that the publisher has contracted with the wonderful Kendra Murray to narrate the audible book of Mother of Fate. She’s the same narrator who did the marvelous job with The Language of Kin and A Matter of Mercy, and those have received raves for her excellence and the skillful way she differentiates voices. We expect the audible book to also be published on April 22, and weirdly enough, the retail sites don’t allow the publisher to put that up for pre-order because it doesn’t exist yet. But I want you to know it will!
I hope you’ll consider a pre-order unless you’re an audible book lover. And another idea–perhaps you would ask your library to carry the novel if you’re not one to buy books? Mainly though, I want to thank you for being a reader, and for opening and reading these posts. I don’t take it for granted, ever. And I always love your comments. As always, I invite you to comment on whatever you like, including Cassie’s opinions, now or anytime. She says to tell you that lacking her own website, because her owner won’t cooperate, she’ll accept your comments (read:compliments here, too.
