Cassie has upsetting news…

…there’s a cat in Lynne’s next book, MOTHERS OF FATE! She wants you to know, she did her level best to get rid of it, but she’s failed. It’s dead in her house (see photo proof) but alive and well in the novel. She assures you, though, the (dull) gray cat has only a bit part–no intelligent thought and certainly no wise dialog such as you’d expect from, say, a brilliant and beautiful beagador. Cassie apologizes and is lobbying for a fine dog in the book after this new one.

Cassie insisted on talking first and now that’s out of the way so I can show you this! Also, I’m sharing the cover for the first time (known in the trade as a cover reveal, meaning I’ve not put this on social media or anywhere else yet.) This will publish on April 22, 2025, and it’s now gone up on Amazon and every other online retail site–Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes and Noble, Books A Million, Apple, Google Play, Kobo.

Here’s the Publishers Marketplace announcement and the cover:

And a better preview of what the story’s about, from the back cover:

After a disabling accident leaves Deana Wilkes pregnant, jobless, and isolated, she is pressured to give up Daniel, her newborn son, for adoption. The boy grows up angry and resentful, lashing out. His adoptive parents struggle to help him and to manage their family life. Now, thirty years later, Deana hires attorney Monica Connell to find her adult son and extend an offer to meet. Unwittingly, she detonates a timebomb in Monica’s life with her wife, as their own family is also shaped by adoption.

Lynne Hugo’s thirteenth novel takes on the reverberating effects of sexual power dynamics in the workplace and vividly portrays lingering psychological wounds. Characters struggle to reconcile control of their own lives with the sacrifices love demands and their longing for a second chance.

I know I’ve told you before about how important pre-orders are to a novel’s success. They gauge early interest and help the publisher know how many print copies to order for the initial run, even if the orders are for ebooks, because because interest and enthusiasm are crucial. Also, though, I know there are a lot of ebook listeners, and I’m also thrilled to be able to tell you that the publisher has contracted with the wonderful Kendra Murray to narrate the audible book of Mother of Fate. She’s the same narrator who did the marvelous job with The Language of Kin and A Matter of Mercy, and those have received raves for her excellence and the skillful way she differentiates voices. We expect the audible book to also be published on April 22, and weirdly enough, the retail sites don’t allow the publisher to put that up for pre-order because it doesn’t exist yet. But I want you to know it will!

I hope you’ll consider a pre-order unless you’re an audible book lover. And another idea–perhaps you would ask your library to carry the novel if you’re not one to buy books? Mainly though, I want to thank you for being a reader, and for opening and reading these posts. I don’t take it for granted, ever. And I always love your comments. As always, I invite you to comment on whatever you like, including Cassie’s opinions, now or anytime. She says to tell you that lacking her own website, because her owner won’t cooperate, she’ll accept your comments (read:compliments here, too.

    • Thank you so much, Randy! I really appreciate the endorsement so much.
AND I want people to be aware of The Many Mothers of Ivy Puddingstone, your novel coming out next Tuesday, 10/29. I genuinely love this story that starts with the civil rights struggle of the 1960s and doesn’t end until 2020–the characters confront all the major social issues and changes of the twentieth century and “…questions what we’re willing to sacrifice in our attempts to right the wrongs of the world.” Don’t miss it, readers!

  1. Very excited to read about your next book! I’m planning to pre-order the Kindle edition as soon as it’s available–I’ll be checking daily.

    • Thank you so much, Jo! I really appreciate it and hope you love the story! My editor has told me that Amazon, etc. won’t post the ebook for pre-order until the final final print editions are in. I’m not exactly sure why but it has something to do with their mysterious policies which, as usual, make absolutely no sense to me. I’m going to ask for a better explanation (one that’s at least comprehensible to me). It seems related to the similar policy about the audible edition, even though it’s under contract. It may have to do with when they actually get the files themselves. If I find anything useful or interesting out, I’ll post it. And thank you again!

    • Oh, thank you so much, Judith! And I’m so glad you loved A Matter of Mercy! I can imagine that one especially speaking to the heart of a Wellfleet native. I know your book is coming out soon, too! Another Wellfleet novel. Please, let us all know the date, exact title, etc. I’m really looking forward to ordering it and finally reading the whole story.

  2. I certainly will pre-order Mothers of Fate. The subject is intriguing, and I know the writing will be good. Looking forward to another Hugo winner!

  3. Preordered! Now I have a few months to enlarge my book case to hold one more Lynne Hugo novel. You are unstoppable. Congratulations! We have the possibility of something similar happening in our family: the return of a child given up for adoption years ago. I’m eager to see how this plays out. Give that sweet (& lucky) pup of yours a hug for me.

    • Thank you so much, Deb! So is this an adult who was relinquished for adoption who has sought contact with a birth parent? That’s really interesting. I hope you’ll tell us how it works out. Thank you for sharing that–and Cassie says thank you for the hug, and for the treat which I told her was from you.

  4. I skimmed as fast as I could past the plot premise because I prefer to discover such things by surprise when I read the book. Nevertheless, two words leapt out at me: “sexual power.” Now I’m even more excited than I already was to read your newest book, Lynne, and I’m sorry I’ll have to wait so many months to do so. That said, you must be sure to send your blog post to Mothers for Liberty a.s.a.p., so they can start banning your book and boosting sales of the pre-order.

    • Geez, Preston, that’s a brilliant idea. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned what an honor it would be to have certain groups ban one of my novels considering the quality of literature (The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Bluest Eye, Beloved, etc.) that have been banned. I dream of it, I confess, but I’ve never actually thought of actively pursuing getting one banned in such a creative manner. I humbly thank you for this most excellent suggestion.

  5. Oh Cassie… Pre-ordered Mothers of Fate today! Very excited for another book by my favorite author. Sure to be a compelling read. Congratulations!

I'd love to know your thoughts, whatever they are. Here's a place to leave a comment.
